I am at that age in life where I am more concerned about being healthy than I am about looking great. Yeah, I’m at that stage in life where I have started waking up with little aches and pains, and starting to feel pain in places I only used to hear old people talk about! What??

It’s been four (4) whole years since I last applied relaxers to my hair. My journey has been one of many ups and downs but there is nothing that could make me go back to the creamy crack right now. I must admit that I have been tempted to along the way but when I really think about it, I always end up preferring to keep my natural hair. And here is why I love my natural hair so much.

  1. I love the way my natural hair feels – Yep, I  absolutely love the way my natural hair feels in my hands. I love the thickness and the “life” that I feel whenever I touch my tresses. I get that feeling of good health and vitality and strength especially when I wash my hair. It just feels good to feel the thickness as I run my hands through while cleaning each section. I can’t really find the right words to explain the feeling but those of you who wash your own natural hair may be able to relate to what I’m saying. You have to experience this feeling for yourself to know exactly what I am talking about.
  2. I love the way my natural hair looks – I hate seeing thin, limpless hair. I love to see hair with body and lots of life and bounce. That’s how my hair looks these days and I am so happy for this. I have naturally thick hair but when I used to relax it, there were times that I couldn’t even tell that my hair was thick. It had become thin and damaged and the ends were stringy and limp. I hated seeing my hair that way. Since I’ve embraced my natural hair once again, I have my thickness back. It’s funny how people used to make fun of thick hair when I was a child. It was the worst thing to have thick hair because it meant broken combs, painful detangling sessions, fear of wash days and teasing from schoolmates. Nowadays, having thick natural hair is something to be desired. Just like how thick lips used to be scorned and now everybody wants thicker lips. Thank God I have these naturally! And that I have learned to appreciate myself the way God made me.
  3. I love the natural hair compliments that I receive – Yesterday I received what I consider the best compliment that a natural sister can get. A sister who was wearing a blonde wig smiled and told me that she loved my hair. I was flattered. It felt truly good to hear those words coming from someone who wasn’t natural herself. And I now receive compliments about my hair on a regular basis. I really appreciate these compliments because God knows that I have put lots of effort into getting my hair in the shape that it is now in. For a very long time in my natural hair journey I struggled with dryness and breakage. I couldn’t figure out why my hair was breaking so badly and I spent several months trying to get my hair back. Because I had been creaming my hair for so long, I really didn’t know how to take care of my natural hair. Now I know so much more. Experience is the greatest teacher.
  4. I love the health of my natural hair – It is true. A woman’s hair is her glory. If her hair doesn’t look good, she doesn’t feel good. And for your hair to look good, it must be healthy. Once upon a time, I would trade health for length but not anymore. The most important thing for me is to have a healthy head of hair on my head regardless of the length. If it’s short, it can be healthy. If it’s long, it can be healthy. Although I have had to sacrifice length for health, I am still happy. Now that I know what it takes to keep my hair looking healthy, maybe I can now focus a little more on length. Then again, if it’s healthy, it’s likely to get longer without me even trying. So maybe I won’t worry about length too much.

Wearing my hair in its natural state makes me feel good. It makes me look good and I feel comfortable with what God blessed me with. I no longer have the urge to alter the chemical makeup of my hair. I like it just the way it is. Naturally :)!

Wheat Begone!

wheat dietHi guys. It’s been awhile, I know. But I’ve been pre-occupied with “stuff”. That’s life I guess. Anyway, I haven’t gone anywhere and I have decided to update you guys on what’s going on with me and the wheat diet that I embarked upon some months back.

Well, first let me just say that I have slacked off heavily in the past month or so. I mean I’ve been eating all sorts of sandwiches and roti and bread and patties. Oh my goodness, I gave myself one inch, but my appetite went and took a whole mile! That’s why I believe that this wheat business is all or nothing. A little bit of wheat will end up being a whole lot of wheat and before you know it, you have become what you used to be – a wheat guzzling, stomach protruding, foggy-brained, miserable person!

I should have had a plan to prevent this from happening but I didn’t. It all started when my sister-in-law came to visit us for a few days. Of course, as the host, I was responsible for meal preparation. Since I had cut out wheat from my diet and from my family’s diet, I had no wheat in the house. Neither did I purchase any wheat when I went shopping. After a few days of no wheat at all, my sister-in-law began to ask questions. “Ahm, you guys don’t eat bread?”, “Can we have black forest cake for dessert today?”. That was it! She had me at “black forest”! How did this woman know my weakness? If there was one thing that could get me off the wheat diet without a fight, it was black forest cake.  I am ashamed to admit it but I caved in without a fight. Like a moth to the fire, I headed straight to the supermarket and purchased some of that delicious black forest cake made by Mega Mart. And I did enjoy that dessert that day.

And on and on it went until I found myself buying bread and other wheat products regularly. Am I really that weak? In fairness to myself, I believe I succumbed to the desire to be a good host. I didn’t want to impose my diet upon my sister-in-law and I wanted her to feel comfortable while she was staying at my place for a few weeks. So I justified my behavior and tried to console myself that it would only last for a few weeks – no biggie. I figured that I could easily get back to my wheat-free lifestyle as soon as her visit ended.

Did I get back to my wheat-free lifestyle when her visit ended? No, I didn’t. Did I try to get back to my wheat-free lifestyle after my sister-in-law left? Yes, yes I did! Did it work. NO, NO it didn’t! In fact, it was near impossible since by now both my son and my husband had gotten accustomed to having wheat again and were even demanding it. What was I supposed to do? It was too much pressure!

But I have taken a stand. I have put my foot down. Because at the end of the day, it is MY health and MY family’s health that are at stake here. Going back on wheat made me realize how negatively wheat had been affecting me and my family all along. As soon as I started to eat wheat regularly again, my sinusitis issues returned, I had brain fog like you wouldn’t imagine, I felt tired even after getting a full night’s rest and of course my stomach started to protrude again like I was a few month’s pregnant. Disgusting!

I don’t want to live like this. I don’t want my family to live like this. So, guess what? I am back on my wheat free diet starting today! No more wheat! Absolutely none! Not even just a little bit because that thing is really addictive! It really is like a drug and so much of the world is addicted to wheat and don’t even realize it! Wheat is slowly killing so many people and they have no idea why they feel so off. Many people would never even think of wheat affecting them negatively but then ignorance is a hell of a thing.

We hear it every day that whole wheat is good for you and that it’s the way to eat healthily and on and on and on. But it’s not necessarily true for everybody. I know for me that my body does not do well on wheat. My brain does not do well on wheat and that whole wheat is the worst thing for me to have. It’s almost like slow poisoning myself. Okay, poisoning may be a little dramatic but you get the point.

So, wheat is out, health is in! Anybody with me?

What’s Your Biological Age?

Me biological agePeople often tell me that I look younger than I actually am. When I tell some people my age, they swear that I’m lying. I must admit that I do not look like I am 41 years old. But I don’t think it has anything to do with genes or anything like that. I think it has a lot to do with my every day lifestyle choices. I was thrilled today to learn that my biological age is actually 26! That’s 11 years younger than I actually am! That makes me feel so good. It’s okay to look younger than your age but I think the more important thing is how old you are biologically. How much the cells in your body have aged. Because the truth is that we are all aging every single day. It’s just that some persons age slower than others because of their choices.

So what’s your biological age? You can find out your biological age here by just answering a few questions about your lifestyle. It pays to stay active and to get lots of sleep and to eat right. The more active you are, the more you sleep, and the healthier your food choices, the younger your biological age will be. Even if you find out that your biological age is more than your actual age, there are practical things that you can do to improve it such as incorporating more exercise into your daily schedule, getting sufficient sleep, having a support group and eating a balanced and highly nutritious diet. You can also quit unhealthy habits such as smoking or drinking too much alcohol or even eating too many sweets.

Now I must admit that for me, I sometimes stay up too late working and I also tend to eat very badly sometimes. So those are areas that I definitely need to work on.

From a young age, I had an interest in staying fit and that interest has never waned. If I go several weeks without doing any physical exercise I start to have backaches and my sinusitis tends to flare up. Then I know that it’s definitely time for a workout. So I try to always get some exercise in, even just 15 minutes per day is better than nothing.  No I don’t have the time to go to the gym so I work out at home mostly.

Thank God for blessing me with good health so that I can exercise and stay physically fit. As a matter of fact, I have recently started doing those Insanity workouts! Let me tell you, they are tough! But at the end of the session I feel revitalized and refreshed. Being a type O blood type also, I thrive on vigorous workouts. But exercise not only makes you feel better. It makes you age slower and it makes you look better as well. With all the benefits of exercise why would I allow laziness to rob me of all those great benefits? Why would you allow laziness to rob you of all the great benefits of exercise. Some time ago, my motive for exercising was mostly for looks. Now that I’m older, looks still matter but my health comes first. Because the fact is that I can look like a million bucks but still be unhealthy. Which means doctors visits which means unnecessary spending and unnecessary stress. Things I would rather do without.

When I started this blog, my emphasis was on being ‘fabulous’. Now my emphasis is more on being ‘fit’ but at the end of the day I want both. Let’s lift our glasses to fitness and ‘fabulousness’! Cheers!

Wheat Belly Fast – Week 1 Update and Results

So it’s official. I have been on my wheat belly fast for approximately one week! It has been something very new for me but also very exciting and it has given me a goal to work towards.

This weekend I took a mini vacation to the north coast and it was absolutely wonderful! I did inform my host beforehand that I am on wheat free regimen and she tried her best to cater to my wheat-free requirements. However, I know it wasn’t easy for her to find food to feed me sometimes. I am really grateful to her for accommodating me and my special requirements. While I ate wheat free, my husband and my son didn’t. They had whatever their little hearts desired.

I had some very healthy meals that were both aesthetically appealing and appealing to the tastebuds. On Friday night when we arrived, my host fed us with Kentucky Fried Chicken. I admit it wasn’t the healthiest choice but at least I didn’t have to eat any wheat.

Saturday morning was when the fun begun. We were treated like royalty as we were served a scrumptious breakfast consisting of saltfish, boiled bananas, boiled yellow yam, fried plantains and avocado pear. It was heavenly! I felt so good afterwards and did not suffer from lethargy nor heaviness. For my beverage I had Blue Mountain Jamaican coffee with cream. It doesn’t get much better than that people!

We skipped lunch because we got so caught up in watching a movie that we didn’t realize how late it was. By the time the movie was done we had to head straight out to a planned function.

You can imagine how hungry we became sitting through the 3 hour long function after not having any lunch. This was something I was not prepared for and had to settle for a chicken sandwich to keep the hunger at bay. That would suffice for dinner. I only ate one half of the bread in order to cut down on the wheat as best I could under the circumstances.

Sunday was the best day where eating was concerned. Again, I had a very healthy and delicious breakfast consisting on cornmeal porridge, ripe banana slices, avocado slices, tomato slices and lettuce.  Here is what it looked like:

I spent the rest of the time basking in the sun, enjoying good conversation and just enjoying the great north coast view.

After a week of being on my wheat free diet, I am very very pleased with what has happened so far. I was not perfect this week as there were a few times when I did indulge and give way to my wheat craving. A lot of it could be blamed on the fact that I was not adequately prepared, however.

Going forward, I will be better prepared since I now know that sticking to a wheat free diet requires substantial planning and organization.

I am very very pleased to report that I have lost 3/4 of an inch from my waist during the week! For me this is a huge accomplishment considering how hard it has been for me to lose weight from my waist in the past. Plus, I didn’t follow the wheat free fast strictly and I also only managed to exercise 3 days for the week when I would normally exercise at least 5 days per week.

So I realize that wheat was in fact contributing a lot to my not being able to have a flat stomach and not being able to lose weight in my mid-section. I would probably have lost another 1/2 and inch if I had followed the diet strictly and had exercised my usual 5 sessions.

These results are really encouraging and I look forward to what week 2 holds. My waist now measures 30 3/4 inches down from 31 1/2 inches 7 days ago. This alone makes up for the wheat withdrawal symptoms that I experienced at the beginning of the week.

Those symptoms have pretty much subsided now.

I am looking forward to bigger and better things in the coming weeks.

30 Days No Wheat Fast – Day #4

wheat belly tiredI can safely say that the wheat that I ate in that cake yesterday, affected me negatively this morning. When I got up this morning I was still tired and felt like I hadn’t slept all night. I yawned uncontrollably all morning. In addition, I had huge dark circles around my eyes from the lack of sleep.

There was nothing that I did differently to account for this adverse reaction other than eat a lot of wheat. My husband and I would usually treat ourselves to generous servings of black forest cake on Saturday nights. Whenever we would do so, I would always feel very tired in the morning and would usually end up waking up very late on a Sunday morning. This is exactly how I felt this morning. It has to be the wheat that was causing me to feel so tired like I hadn’t slept for an entire 24 hours.

Anyway, I fought the sleepy feeling because I had work that I needed to get done. The rest of the day went quite well. I managed to go for the entire day without eating any wheat and I am really happy that I managed to do so. I didn’t do my workout today but I will make up for it before the week ends.

For breakfast I had oats porridge sprinkled with ripe banana cubes. I had instant chocolate for my beverage.

For lunch I had stew chicken, steamed callaloo and rice and peas. I forgot to take out the kidney beans since they don’t work well with my blood type. I will remember that next time. For a beverage, I had pineapple flavoured Tang.

Dinner was wonderful and I had stew chicken, boiled yellow yam and steamed pak choi. All in all I did get a good amount of veggies in today. And the fact they they were dark green and leafy means that they were choc full of all the right nutrients.

I am beginning to wonder how I am going to manage eating out with wheat restrictions. The Jamaican diet is largely comprised of wheat products in the form of flour. Not to mention that I normally tend to go straight for burgers when I need to grab something to eat on the road. I guess, I will have to have the burger meat without having the buns if push comes to shove. I should be attending a function soon and I really wonder how I’m going to resist the usual pastry  hors douvres  (did I spell that right?). Whatever happens, I have made up my mind that I will not eat wheat voluntarily except in dire circumstances. Lord, help me!
